Project Overview
This restoration project in Bolton was all about giving a tired-looking driveway and winding garden pathway a brand new lease of life, while still making use of the original materials to retain character and charm.
Lifting the Old Paving & Preparing the Base
We started by carefully lifting all the original Tegula-style paving blocks from both the driveway and the garden path. The existing surface had become uneven over time, and there were clear signs that the base underneath needed upgrading.
Once the surface was cleared, the entire area was excavated and a fresh layer of new hardcore to strengthen the foundation was introduced. Before laying any new material, we installed a membrane sheeting across the area. This was a crucial step in preventing weeds from breaking through the surface in the future and helps with overall longevity.

Laying the New Edging & Sand
After the hardcore was fully compacted, we applied a layer of sharp grit sand, ready for relaying the blocks. To give the driveway and pathway a cleaner, more defined look, we supplied and installed brand new charcoal edging blocks around the perimeter of the driveway. This added a sharp, modern border while keeping the rustic look of the original Tegula paving.
Relaying & Restoring the Original Paving
We then relaid the original Tegula paving blocks, setting them beautifully on the new bed of sand and membrane. The gave the old paving a new solid foundation while retaining its traditional appearance. Once all the paving was laid and the job was taking shape, we used a professional industrial power washer to deep clean all the blocks. This process removed years of dirt and grime, instantly restoring colour and character back into the stonework, making it look brand new!
The Pathway
The garden pathway received the exact same treatment, lifted, cleaned and relaid on a fresh new base of hardcore, membrane sheeting, and sharp sand. With the new charcoal edging running neatly along both sides, the path now flows naturally through the garden, blending beautifully with its surroundings.
The Final Result
This restoration project is the perfect example of how you can completely transform an outdoor space with the right groundwork, a bit of care and without needing brand new materials. The end result was a clean, modernised driveway and pathway that still kept the original charm of the property, and with the added bonus of a much stronger and long-lasting foundation underneath.
