This project in Halifax involved a complete transformation of the rear of the property, replacing the existing dated circular paving and sections of lawn with a large, contemporary porcelain patio.
The aim was to create a much cleaner outdoor living space running across the full rear elevation of the house, while dealing properly with the different ground levels and ensuring effective drainage.

Removing the Existing Patio
The original garden featured several areas of older concrete paving, including circular patio sections and curved steps immediately outside the property.
These were removed along with the necessary sections of turf and soil, allowing us to completely redesign the area rather than being restricted by the previous layout.
The ground was excavated to the required depth ready for the new patio foundations.
Ground Preparation and Foundations
With the old paving removed, the entire area was prepared from the ground up.
A new sub-base was installed and thoroughly compacted to provide a strong and stable foundation for the porcelain paving. A membrane was also incorporated during the preparation work.
Careful attention was given to the levels and falls across this large patio, particularly because the garden itself rises away from the property.
Large Format Porcelain Paving
The main patio was finished with large-format light grey porcelain paving, creating a crisp and contemporary appearance that works particularly well against the property’s red brickwork.
The subtle stone-effect finish introduces texture without making the patio look overly busy, while the consistent joints give the whole installation a clean, precise finish.
The new paving now runs across virtually the entire rear of the property, providing considerably more usable space than the previous arrangement.
Contrasting Charcoal Block Borders
One of the standout features of this project is the charcoal block paved border.
Dark blocks were installed around the perimeter of the porcelain, creating a strong contrast against the light grey paving. The border helps define the patio and provides a smart transition between the paved area and surrounding lawn.
The same contrasting finish was incorporated into the steps, tying the different parts of the installation together.
New Steps and Raised Areas
The previous curved steps were removed and replaced as part of the redesign.
New straight-edged steps were constructed to complement the contemporary appearance of the porcelain patio, with charcoal detailing providing a sharp contrast.
This creates a much cleaner transition between the property’s doors and the main patio level.
Patio Drainage
With such a substantial area of paving, correctly managing surface water was an important part of the installation.
A linear channel drainage system was installed alongside the raised section of the patio, helping collect water from the paved surfaces and directing it away appropriately.
Falls were carefully incorporated into the patio during installation so that water naturally travels towards the drainage rather than collecting against the property.
A Much Larger Outdoor Living Area
The biggest change is the amount of practical outdoor space that has been created.
Instead of several disconnected circular patios surrounded by lawn, the property now benefits from one substantial paved area extending across the rear of the house.
There is ample room for outdoor furniture, dining areas, entertaining and general family use, while a large proportion of the existing lawn and established garden has been retained.
The Finished Porcelain Patio
The completed patio has given this Halifax garden a completely different character.
The combination of light grey porcelain paving, charcoal block borders, matching steps and integrated drainage creates a modern finish that complements the property while remaining practical and relatively low maintenance.
From the original circular concrete paving to the completed large-format porcelain installation, this was a substantial transformation and an excellent example of how redesigning the layout can make much better use of a large garden.
