This garden in Clitheroe underwent a complete transformation, replacing the old timber decking and uneven outdoor areas with a bright, modern porcelain patio.
Although relatively compact, this project involved a considerable amount of preparation and landscaping. Different levels had to be carefully incorporated into the new design, with new platforms and steps creating a much more practical connection between the house and the rest of the garden.

Removing the Existing Decking
The original garden featured a large area of ageing timber decking arranged over several levels. This was completely dismantled and removed to allow us to start again with a properly prepared base.
We also excavated the necessary soil and existing material to achieve the correct levels for the new patio.
Preparing the New Patio Foundations
Once the area had been cleared, we prepared the ground for the new paving.
A suitable patio membrane/underlay was installed as part of the groundwork before the new sub-base was constructed. Getting these foundations right was particularly important because of the changes in level across the garden and the different sections of paving.
Timber Sleeper Borders
New pressure-treated timber sleepers were incorporated throughout the design.
These provide strong, clearly defined edges while also helping us manage the different levels of the garden. The timber introduces a warmer natural finish alongside the light porcelain and creates an attractive contrast around the steps and raised sections.
600 x 900 Porcelain Paving
The main patio was finished using beautiful 600 x 900mm light-coloured porcelain paving.
The large-format porcelain tiles immediately make the garden feel brighter and more spacious. Subtle variation within the surface gives the paving a natural stone appearance while retaining the crisp, contemporary finish associated with porcelain.
The slabs were laid with consistent joints to create a clean and uniform appearance across the main patio, pathways and platforms.
New Platforms and Steps
One of the more involved aspects of this project was redesigning the different levels around the property.
Rather than simply replacing the existing decking like-for-like, we created a series of new paved platforms and steps, framed with timber sleepers.
This has produced a much more permanent and practical layout, allowing the porcelain paving to flow naturally between the different areas.
French Drainage System
Effective drainage was another important consideration.
A French drainage system was incorporated around the patio to help manage surface and ground water and direct it away from the newly paved areas.
The drainage areas were then finished with Black Ice decorative gravel, providing a neat contrasting border around the light porcelain.
Recessed Access Cover
The existing access point within the patio was retained using a recessed cover, allowing the porcelain paving to continue through the area rather than leaving a conventional utility cover interrupting the finished surface.
It’s a small detail, but one that contributes significantly to the clean appearance of the completed patio.
The Finished Porcelain Patio
The transformation has completely changed this Clitheroe garden.
What was previously a collection of ageing timber decked areas is now a bright and contemporary outdoor space, with 600 x 900 porcelain paving, sleeper-edged steps and platforms, French drainage and Black Ice gravel detailing all working together.
Despite being a relatively small garden, there was a lot involved in getting the levels, foundations, drainage and detailing right. The finished result makes considerably better use of the available space and provides the homeowners with a smart, low-maintenance area for relaxing and entertaining.
