Block Paving and Read Garden Patio Project

Some back gardens have experienced more wear and tear than others. Of course, this is due in large part to the fact that they serve many functional purposes. The only issue is that it can become difficult to keep up with regular maintenance and landscaping requirements; particularly for those who lead busy lives.

The team at Lakestone Paving understands that overseeing a back garden can be quite challenging on occasion. This is why we offer our clients a host of targeted solutions. One involves bespoke block paving. A recent project illustrates what can be accomplished within a relatively short period of time with professional help. Let’s take a look at the process as well as the end result.

Preparing the Back Garden

Similar to the countless other gardens which we have tackled over the years, we needed to thoroughly prepare the area for the subsequent patio and paving stones. This involved removing the grass as well as other everyday objects. Furthermore, the patio needed to be level so that potential drainage issues could be avoided. Once the subsoil was even, an additional layer of sand was placed upon the surface. This sand was thereafter compacted; providing a strong and uniform base for the future blocks.

Of course, we explained all of these steps to the customer well in advance. This provided a sense of transparency and ensured that they were able to appreciate the time frames involved. The real work could thereafter begin.

Laying the Block Paving Stones

Here are some of the reasons why block paving stones are preferred by so many of our customers:

  • They provide superior levels of drainage.
  • The stones are available in a wide variety of tones and sizes.
  • Unique patterns can be created with the help of our skilled artisans.

Simply stated, block paving stones are some of the best ways to add a unique sense of luxury to any back garden without overwhelming the environment.

We chose to employ a stepped pattern (often referred to as a “herringbone” style). This pattern provided the patio with a sense of visual depth and the stones themselves locked one another into place. Such an approach also allows each stone to slightly expand and contact with temperature changes. This all but eliminates issues such as cracking (sometimes associated with other materials such as traditional concrete).

A Dash of Personalisation

While the pattern itself was stunning to behold, an additional approach was taken. We placed a series of darker stones around the outside of the patio. These borders were then augmented through the use of peripheral crushed stone. Crushed stone is yet another way to address potential drainage issues without impacting the aesthetics of the patio surface. Let’s also point out that unlike grass or sod, such stones require virtually no maintenance.

The Finishing Touches

Some of the methods that we employ are not necessarily visible to the naked eye. However, they are just as important from a long-term perspective. Safeguarding the block paving stones from harsh elements (such as weather conditions and the ultraviolet rays of the sun) is yet another means to extend the lifespan of any patio. This is the reason why we completed the project by coating the surface of the stones with a protective sealant. The main goal here was to guarantee that the customer had few maintenance issues and would therefore enjoy a higher return on investment (ROI).

Needless to say, we were extremely pleased with the outcome of this project. We also strove to create a sense of professional transparency from the very beginning. This approach allowed us to avoid any hidden costs and equally unpleasant surprises along the way. The client was ecstatic with the appearance of their garden and they were amazed with the overall transformation.
