Lakestone Paving recently completed a fantastic block paving project in Oldham, transforming the front driveway, side pathway and adjoining patio area of a residential property.
The original outdoor space consisted of ageing tarmac, uneven surfaces and overgrown sections that offered little visual appeal. Our team completely redesigned the area, creating a smart, practical and low-maintenance surface using charcoal block paving with contrasting light grey borders.
The finished installation provides a seamless appearance around the property, with a traditional herringbone paving pattern, carefully positioned edging and a coordinated design throughout.
Location: Oldham
Timeline: 4 Days
Materials: Grey & Light Grey Block Pavers
Removing the Existing Driveway and Preparing the Ground
The project began with the removal of the existing tarmac driveway, unwanted vegetation and deteriorating surfaces surrounding the property.
The original driveway had become tired and uneven, while the side areas were overgrown and lacked a consistent finish.
Our team cleared the existing surfaces and excavated the required areas to prepare for the new block paving installation.
The groundwork included preparing the front driveway, clearing the side access and establishing suitable levels for the new paving.
Groundwork and Sub-Base Preparation
Once the existing surfaces had been removed, we prepared the foundations for the new block paved areas.
A suitable aggregate sub-base was prepared and compacted to provide a stable foundation for the paving installation.
The team then established the finished levels and prepared the laying surface, ensuring the new driveway and pathways would connect neatly with the property’s entrances and surrounding boundaries.
Particular attention was given to the narrow side pathway, where accurate preparation was important to achieve a consistent finish.
Charcoal Block Paving with Contrasting Grey Borders
For the main driveway and adjoining paved areas, we installed attractive charcoal block paving laid in a traditional herringbone pattern.
This popular paving style provides a smart, contemporary appearance while remaining well suited to traditional residential properties.
To complement the charcoal paving, we incorporated a contrasting light grey block paved border around the perimeter.
A secondary charcoal edging detail was also introduced alongside the lighter blocks, creating a distinctive double-border effect.
The contrasting colours help define the driveway and provide an attractive frame around the finished installation.
New Block Paved Side Pathway
An important part of this project involved completely transforming the narrow side access running alongside the property.
Previously finished in worn tarmac with overgrown edges, the pathway was redesigned using the same charcoal block paving as the main driveway.
The paving was continued around the corner of the property, maintaining the herringbone pattern and incorporating matching contrasting borders.
This creates a coordinated appearance between the front driveway and side pathway while providing a cleaner, more practical access route.
Coordinated Patio and Entrance Areas
The project also included upgrading the adjoining paved areas around the property.
Using the same charcoal paving and contrasting border design, we created a consistent finish that connects the different outdoor spaces.
The paving was carefully installed around the building, including the entrance areas and external corners, to achieve neat lines and a professional appearance.
By carrying the same materials throughout the project, the driveway, pathways and patio areas now complement one another rather than appearing as separate surfaces.
The Finished Block Paving Transformation
The completed project has completely changed the appearance of this property in Oldham.
What was previously an ageing combination of tarmac, weeds and uneven surfaces is now a beautifully finished block paved driveway with matching pathways and patio areas.
The charcoal paving provides a modern appearance, while the contrasting light grey borders introduce definition and character.
The result is a smart, durable and low-maintenance outdoor space that enhances the property’s kerb appeal and provides practical access around the home.
