Project Overview
We recently completed a high-quality Indian sandstone patio installation in Accrington, transforming an underused area into a durable and attractive outdoor space. The customer wanted a natural stone patio that would enhance the appearance of their front garden while providing a practical, low-maintenance area for seating and entertaining.
Indian sandstone was chosen for its natural colour variation, long lifespan, and slip-resistant surface, making it an ideal option for outdoor paving in Lancashire’s changing weather conditions.
Initial Site Assessment & Preparation
Before installation began, our team carried out a full site assessment to understand ground conditions, drainage requirements, and the desired patio layout. The existing driveway was carefully cleared, and the area excavated to the correct depth to allow for a strong foundation.
Proper ground preparation is essential for any patio project. By removing unstable ground and preparing the area correctly, we ensure the finished patio remains level, structurally sound, and resistant to movement over time.
Sub-Base & Groundworks
Once excavation was complete, a solid hardcore sub-base was installed and mechanically compacted to provide a stable foundation. This stage is critical to the longevity of the patio, preventing future sinking or uneven slabs.
A suitable bedding layer was then applied to allow precise levelling of the Indian sandstone slabs. This ensures a clean, professional finish and allows water to drain correctly across the patio surface.
Laying the Indian Sandstone Patio
The Indian sandstone slabs were carefully laid by hand, with attention paid to alignment, spacing, and overall layout. Natural stone patios require experience and precision, as each slab has unique colour tones and surface textures.
Our team worked methodically to create a balanced, visually pleasing pattern while maintaining consistent levels throughout the patio. This approach delivers both aesthetic appeal and long-term durability.
Jointing & Finishing Details
After the slabs were securely in place, the patio was finished using professional jointing, sealing the gaps between slabs to improve strength and weather resistance. This not only enhances the appearance of the patio but also helps prevent weed growth and water ingress.
Edging and finishing details were completed to neatly integrate the patio with the surrounding garden, creating a smooth transition between outdoor spaces.
