massive block paving tarmac driveway project 05

Project Overview

This extensive project in a beautifully landscaped residential setting involved a full transformation of a large, deteriorated driveway. With over 220m2 of block paving and 150m2 of tarmac to install, this wasn’t a job for the faint-hearted. In fact, three other companies turned it down due to the sheer size and complexity, but our team stepped in with confidence, delivering a stunning, robust driveway that exceeded the client’s expectations.

Initial Preparation

The original driveway had seen better days, it was badly cracked, uneven, and patched over the years. Our first task was a full excavation of the entire area, including the rear access and long private lane. We dug down to a depth of approximately 10-12 inches to remove all compromised surface material and ensure we reached a solid sub-base.

Foundation Installation

A heavy-duty geotextile membrane was laid across the full surface to stabilise the ground and prevent weed growth. This was followed by the delivery and mechanical compaction of several tons of MOT Type 1 hardcore. We made sure to level and compress the base in layers to prevent future sinking or movement, especially important for a driveway of this scale and vehicle use.

Before and After:

Block Paving Section

The area directly in front of the property was chosen for decorative paving. We laid high-quality block pavers in a herringbone pattern, known for its strength under load and eye-catching appearance. Charcoal was selected for the main section to provide a bold, clean finish, while a light grey border framed the space, offering a sharp contrast that tied in beautifully with the surrounding brickwork and landscaping.

Tarmac Surfacing of the Lane

Next, we tackled the lengthy private access road leading to the house. Using a 10mm wearing course tarmac, chosen specifically for strength, flexibility and water drainage, we resurfaced the full lane in sections. Matching paver edging was installed on both sides to mirror the driveway’s style and keep the overall design cohesive. The smooth, black finish not only looks sharp but significantly improves driving comfort and durability.

Rear & Side Access Finishing

We didn’t stop at the front of the lane, our team also tarmacked the rear access path and side areas of the property, bringing all surfaces up to the same standard. Transitions were carefully sloped for water runoff, and we ensured that every edge, curve, and joint was finished neatly.

The Big Reveal

The finished driveway is a testament to what’s possible when expertise meets determination. Over the course of two intensive weeks, our team transformed the entire space into a seamless combination of durability and design. The contrasting block paving and tarmac layout is not only practical and hard-wearing but also highly attractive. The clean edges, flush finishes, and smooth gradients provide a modern yet timeless appearance that enhances both kerb appeal and usability.

This wasn’t just a large project, it was a complex one, and the end result speaks volumes. From the elegant herringbone paving to the freshly tarmacked private road, the property now boasts an entrance that truly reflects its quality.
