This project was for a Blackburn Householder, we dug out 12 inches deep, then backfilled inches of type 1 hard-core compressed and compacted. Concrete flags stones laid throughout the driveway which was laid on a wet bed of cement.

One of the challenges associated with driveway paving is that existing materials may often need to be removed before the actual project can begin. A recent property in Blackburn fully illustrates this point. The initial driveway consisted of two rows of flagstones surrounding a central strip of irregular flat stones. Due to its age, the driveway was no longer completely level and significant gaps had developed between many of the blocks. Thus, the entire surface had to be removed.

The Initial Removal Process

Using sheer manpower, our team of paving specialists focused upon removing all of the existing stones. These were placed aside for collection. There were likewise materials beneath the paved surface that needed to be discarded. Due to the sheer amount of loose debris, this was a particularly challenging task. It was nonetheless tackled within a short period of time. Once these initial steps were completed and the clean subsurface was levelled, the real transformation could begin.

Installing the Flagstone Surface

One unique aspect of this Blackburn property is that a series of flagstones off to the side of the driveway were allowed to remain in place. Therefore, our team used the edges of these relatively unharmed stones as a guide when installing the new ones. These were quite large stones; ideal for achieving a flat and uniform driveway surface. The stones were laid in alternating courses (similar to the appearance of a brick wall). This method helps to prevent them from moving as a result of temperature fluctuations or standard wear and tear.

Each one was carefully laid in its place; technicians ensuring that all angles were true and that the slope remained uniform. This is very important in terms of drainage as well as overall aesthetic appeal. Due to the sheer size of these stones, many needed to be cut when dealing with external borders and where the edge of the driveway Met the exterior of the home. A single flagstone was also used to create a step to the front door; tying in the entranceway with the driveway

A Durable and Long-Lasting Solution

There are several reasons why flagstone driveways are some of our most popular service options. Flagstones are extremely durable and they can last for decades at a time. Their natural surfaces are highly resistant to slipping and they will resist moisture. This is important when dealing with high water tables or areas associated with poor drainage. Finally, they require very little maintenance and their colours will not fade with age.
