Project Overview
We recently transformed this tired, uneven driveway in Burnley into a modern and durable block paved surface, enhancing both the look and functionality of the property, giving the homeowners a clean, practical and stylish entrance to their home.
Initial Condition
The original driveway consisted of large, uneven and discoloured concrete slabs, that had become cracked, stained and sunken over time. They posed a trip hazard and made the driveway look uninviting. The homeowners were keen to modernise the space while also improving access and drainage.
Before and After:
Ground Preparation
We started by carefully removing the existing concrete slabs from the driveway, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding area. Once cleared, we excavated the ground to the appropriate depth and installed a geo-textile membrane. This crucial layer helps to prevent weed growth and provides long-term stability by separating the sub-base from the soil beneath.
Laying the Base Layer
With the membrane securely in place, we installed a solid MOT Type 1 hardcore foundation, compacting it thoroughly with a vibrating plate compactor to create a strong and reliable base. Over this, we added a level bed of sharp sand, which was screeded to ensure perfect levels for laying the block paving.
Laying the Block Paving
We then began carefully laying the new block paving in a classic herringbone pattern with contrasting border detailing to frame the driveway. Each block was laid with precision to ensure tight joints and a clean, structured appearance.
Finishing Touches
Once all blocks were in place, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints to lock them securely together. The entire driveway was then compacted using a vibrating plate compactor to bed everything down and give a clean, professional finish.
