Charcoal Block Paved Driveway with Sleepers and Steps – Lostock, Bolton
We’re thrilled to share one of our recent projects that we completed for a client in Lostock, Bolton. When they first approached us, they had a clear vision in mind and even showed us an inspiration photo of exactly what they were hoping to achieve.
The project took us five days from start to finish, and watching this transformation unfold was genuinely exciting. What started as an uneven grassed area became a stunning contemporary driveway that can be enjoyed for years to come.
Project Steps:
1. Clearing the Way
We started by clearing away all the existing grass and uneven surface. It’s always satisfying to see a blank canvas ready for transformation!
2. Laying the Foundation
Next came the hard graft, excavating the entire area to the proper depth and installing a compacted Type 1 MOT sub-base. This might not be the glamorous part, but it’s absolutely crucial for creating a driveway that will stand the test of time and handle whatever the British weather throws at it.
3. Creating Structure and Character
We installed timber retainers running down both sides of the driveway that define the edges nicely and add a bit of rustic contrast against the contemporary paving.
We also built raised planter boxes that give our clients space to add their own plants and flowers – a chance to put their own stamp on it.
4. Building the Steps:
The Indian Sandstone steps were carefully constructed in Kendall Gray to ensure they’re not just practical and safe for daily use, but also visually appealing. The bullnose edging gives them a smooth, finished appearance that’s gentle underfoot.
5. Preparing for Perfection
We laid down a weed control membrane across the base – nobody wants weeds spoiling a beautiful new driveway! This was followed by a carefully levelled and compacted sharp sand layer to ensure every block would sit perfectly.
6. The Main Event
Here’s where the magic really happened.
We laid the granite block paving in a 45° herringbone pattern using a combination of charcoal and natural grey paving. It’s a technique that requires precision and experience, but the result is absolutely worth it. The pattern adds a nice visual dimension and the colour gives the property a clean, contemporary look.
7. The Finishing Flourishes
We brushed kiln-dried sand into all the joints, making sure it worked its way down properly between the blocks. After that, we ran our vibrating plate over the entire surface to lock everything firmly in place and get a smooth, level finish across the whole driveway.
We filled the raised planters with fresh soil and added some decorative slate for extra visual appeal. We laid fresh new turf along the sides, giving the whole frontage that well-established, polished look.
Finally, we gave everything a thorough clean down and made sure every single detail met our standards and, most importantly, our clients’ expectations.
Conclusion:
What was once a tired grassed area is now a spacious, sophisticated driveway that’s become a real feature of the property. The herringbone pattern in granite creates incredible kerb appeal, the Indian Sandstone steps provide elegant access, and those sleeper-bordered planters add character and potential for personalisation.
The clients were delighted when they saw the finished result. It matched their inspiration photo exactly, and that’s always our goal. Another successful transformation completed by our team here in Bolton, and we couldn’t be prouder of how this one turned out!
