Raised Indian Sandstone Patio & Retaining Wall in Halifax
This was a massive and technically demanding construction project in Halifax, completed over 14 days. The challenge was to transform a steeply sloped and inaccessible back garden into a stunning, usable outdoor living space. The primary objective was to build a huge, raised patio platform, perfectly level with the property’s patio doors, which required the construction of a 2-meter high structural retaining wall and carefully designed steps for access.
Major Excavation & Demolition
The project began with a huge amount of earthworks. We demolished all existing structures and excavated tons of soil and rubble from the sloped garden to create the footprint for the new raised patio.
Structural Retaining Wall Construction
The cornerstone of the project was the construction of a 2-meter high, wrap-around retaining wall. Built from high-density concrete blocks on deep foundations, this wall was engineered to safely retain the massive weight of the new raised patio structure.

Hardcore Sub-Base & Infill
With the retaining wall in place, the vast area was backfilled with hundreds of tons of MOT Type 1 hardcore. This was brought in and meticulously compacted in layers to create an incredibly solid, stable, and load-bearing foundation for the new patio.
Multi-Level Steps & Platforms
To ensure safe and easy access between the house, the new patio, and the lower garden, we designed and built a series of wide, multi-platform steps. The risers were built with blockwork, and the treads were finished with premium Indian sandstone to match the main patio.
Patio Installation & Drainage
A screeded sand bed was prepared before laying the premium Indian sandstone flags in a random, multi-sized pattern. To manage surface water, a channel drain was installed at the base of the wall, and a recessed manhole cover was integrated into the paving for a seamless, high-end finish.
Final Result:
The result is a stunning feat of landscape engineering, transforming a difficult, unusable space into a spectacular and valuable extension of the home. The project demonstrates a huge amount of work and technical skill packed into a relatively small area. The expansive, level patio provides a perfect area for entertaining, while the solid retaining wall and elegant steps ensure the space is not only beautiful but also safe, practical and built to last.
