Commercial Stable Yard Surfacing & Drainage in Helmshore
A large-scale and complex project at a busy, working horse paddock and stables in Helmshore. Our team undertook a complete renovation of the yard, installing a new, durable tarmac surface, a comprehensive drainage system, and a decorative cobblestone entrance.
The Challenge
Working in a live stable yard presents unique challenges. The existing surfaces were worn and suffered from poor drainage, creating muddy and unsafe conditions for both horses and staff. The client needed a robust, long-lasting, and low-maintenance solution that could withstand heavy use from animals and vehicles. The project required careful planning to tie multiple jobs together while minimising disruption to the daily operations of the stables.
Our Solution
- Full Groundworks:
- We began with a complete excavation of the entire area, digging out the old, failing surfaces to create a clean and solid formation.
- Robust Foundation:
- Across all areas, we laid a heavy-duty membrane followed by a compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore sub-base. This ensures a stable and durable foundation capable of handling equestrian traffic.
- Advanced Drainage System:
- Effective drainage was critical. We installed ACO channel drains around the food store to prevent any water ingress. We also engineered a new soakaway system to manage the water collected from the channels effectively.
- Specialist Surfacing:
- For the main yard area, we used a high-quality SMA (stone mastic asphalt) tarmac. This is a hard-wearing and porous surface, ideal for stable yards as it helps to manage surface water efficiently.
- Decorative Entrance:
- To create a smart and welcoming entrance to the property, we designed and installed a beautiful cobblestone feature across the main gate, blending durability with traditional style.
