The Helmshore Driveway That Got A Serious Upgrade!
When you think of a country lane, you think rustic, maybe a bit bumpy… but this beautiful home in Helmshore deserved something a little more special. The mission? To transform a long, rough track into a seriously smart entrance, combining the sleekness of tarmac with the timeless class of block paving.
The Brief: Tame the Track!
The existing lane was looking a bit sorry for itself. It was uneven, undefined, and just didn’t do justice to the stunning property it leads to. The owners wanted a surface that was smooth and practical for driving on, but with a touch of design flair to make a great first impression. Our job was to bring that vision to life.
The “How We Did It” Breakdown
This transformation took a bit of muscle and a lot of precision. Here’s the lowdown on how we tackled this 120-metre private lane.
- The Great Clear Out:
- First up, we had to say goodbye to the old, worn-out tarmac. We got the diggers in and removed every last bit of debris, clearing the entire lane to create a clean canvas, ready for some seriously solid new foundations.
- Rock Solid Foundations:
- Next, we laid a Type 1 hardcore foundation across the whole area. We didn’t mess about here, this was compacted with a proper heavy-duty roller, not your average piece of kit. This ensures long-lasting stability and a base that won’t quit.
- Edging with Style:
- This is where the design flair comes in. We laid a stunning block paved border using a combination of a single line of natural grey blocks next to a double charcoal “soldier course”. All of this was set on a solid concrete base for maximum support, creating a crisp, clear border and that beautiful, inviting pattern at the entrance.
- The Tarmac Finale
- With the stylish frame in place, it was time for the main event. We laid a generous 60mm layer of compact, 20mm grade tarmac. To finish it off, we cool-rolled the entire surface with a vibrating sit-and-drive roller, leaving it perfectly smooth, incredibly durable, and ready for action.
